Phase-locked µPIV analysis of flow dynamics in a simulated root canal with different laser-activated irrigations.

To measure the dynamic characteristics of the flow field in a complex root canal model activated by two laser-activated irrigation (LAI) modalities at different activation energy outputs: photon-induced photoacoustic streaming (PIPS) and microshort pulse (MSP). A phase-locked micro-scale Particle Image Velocimetry (µPIV) system was employed to characterise the temporal variations of LAI-induced velocity fields in the root canal following a single laser pulse. The wall shear stress (WSS) in the lateral root canal was subsequently estimated from the phase-averaged velocity fields. Both PIPS and MSP were able to generate the 'breath mode' of the irrigant current under all tested conditions. The transient irrigation flush in the root canal peaked at speeds close to 6 m/s. However, this intense flushing effect persisted for only about 2000 µs (or 3% of a single laser-pulse activation cycle). For MSP, the maximum WSS magnitude was approximately 3.08 Pa at an activation energy of E = 20 mJ/pulse, rising to 9.01 Pa at E = 50 mJ/pulse. In comparison, PIPS elevated the WSS to 10.63 Pa at E = 20 mJ/pulse. Elevating the activation energy can boost the peak flushing velocity and the maximum WSS, thereby enhancing irrigation efficiency. Given the same activation energy, PIPS outperforms MSP. Additionally, increasing the activation frequency may be an effective strategy to improve irrigation performance further.

Dual-Orthogonal-Plane Particle Image Velocimetry Measurement of the Turbulent Flow in the Channel Head of a Large-Scale Steam Generator Mockup

Abstract In this work, a large-scale mockup of a compact complex system integrating a steam generator (SG) and a reactor coolant pump (RCP) is considered. The three-dimensional turbulent flow in the steam generator channel head (SGCH) is measured in detail. Dual-orthogonal-plane particle image velocimetry (PIV) is employed to extract high-resolution flow information in two orthogonal planes. Two separate measurements are first made to see the three-dimensional time-mean flow dynamics and the statistical quantities in the two planes. These measurements highlight two distinct flow phenomena: jet arrays and massive turbulent separation bubbles (TSBs). These patterns are attributed to mass flow redistribution in the U-shaped tubes. Proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) identifies the first POD mode as corresponding to the TSB breathing-like motion, which significantly intensifies the side view streamwise velocity fluctuations, leading to them reaching 370% of the local mean velocity. To examine the unsteady behavior of massively separated regions, the dual-orthogonal-plane PIV system is then synchronized to simultaneously measure variations in the flow fields, and the missing data due to illumination interference are reconstructed using gappy POD. The synchronized analysis reveals a direct relationship between the low-frequency fluctuations in the side and front views. These fluctuations are in phase across both views, indicating a synchronized behavior that spans the entire field. This large-scale low-frequency breathing motion has critical implications for numerical simulations and sheds light on the unsteady behavior of the RCP system within the SGCH.

Investigation of fluid flow during flow boiling inside a horizontal rectangular channel with single-sided heating using particle image velocimetry

Subcooled flow boiling is a highly efficient cooling systems for thermal management systems. This study explores the intricate dynamics of subcooled flow boiling within a horizontal channel, investigating the impact of vapor generation on liquid-phase velocity using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and advanced image processing techniques. Four mass flow rates ranging from 5–20 g/s with subcooled inlet conditions are investigated in a rectangular channel with single-sided heating. Three regions of interest along the heated channel are investigated for instantaneous PIV analysis. The PIV system captures detailed velocity profiles, illustrating the impact of varying mass flow rates and heat flux levels on flow behavior. Vapor masking techniques are introduced to enhance the precision of PIV data by mitigating interference from the vapor phase. Results demonstrate the influence of vapor bubbles on flow resistance, revealing non-uniform velocity distributions and turbulence near the liquid–vapor interface. The study emphasizes the critical role of inertia and buoyancy forces in shaping the velocity profiles. Moreover, the investigation sheds light on the effects of flow rates on the interfacial behaviors, hinting at a transition point between 10 and 15 g/s. In summary, this research contributes valuable insights into the nuanced dynamics of flow boiling, laying the foundation for future studies on turbulence, heat transfer, and phase-change phenomena in two-phase thermal management systems.

Reactive control of velocity fluctuations using an active deformable surface and real-time PIV

This study demonstrates an experimental realization of turbulence control strategies previously explored by Choi et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 262, 1994, pp. 75–110) through numerical simulations. To conduct the experiments, a deformable surface with a streamwise array of 16 independently controlled actuators was developed. A real-time particle image velocimetry (RT-PIV) system was also created for flow measurements. The objective of the control strategy was to target the sweep and ejection motions of the vortex shedding from a spherical cap placed in a laminar boundary layer. Reactive control strategies consisted of wall-normal surface deformations that opposed or complied with the wall-normal (v) or streamwise (u) velocity fluctuations obtained from the RT-PIV. The results showed two primary outcomes of the control approach. Firstly, it effectively hindered the advancement of sweep motions towards the wall. Secondly, it disrupted the periodic shedding of vortices. The v-control with opposing wall motions and u-control with compliant wall motions exhibited strong inhibition of sweep motions, while the v-control with compliant and u-control with opposing wall motions showed weaker inhibition. All reactive control cases resulted in the disruption of vortex shedding. In some instances, this disruption was accompanied by increased turbulent kinetic energy due to the generation of additional flow motions. However, the v-control with opposing wall motions significantly reduced the vortex-shedding energy while maintaining total turbulent kinetic energy close to or below that of the unforced flow. Overall, the experiments show the effectiveness of reactive control strategies in mitigating sweep motions and disrupting vortical structures, offering insights for developing reactive control strategies.

Drag reduction of the turbulent boundary layer over divergent sawtooth riblets surface with a superhydrophobic coat

Energy conservation and environmental protection have become pivotal components of the green economy. In recent years, underwater drag reduction technology has garnered significant interest. This study discusses a novel composite surface that combines divergent riblets with a superhydrophobic coating (D-rib&SHS) to enhance the drag reduction rate. Alongside this new surface, a riblet surface with a superhydrophobic coating (rib&SHS, without yaw angles) and a smooth surface are used as comparison groups. The turbulent boundary layer flow of these three surfaces is measured using a two-dimensional particle image velocimetry system. The results indicated that the maximum drag reduction rate of D-rib&SHS is approximately 27% higher than that of rib&SHS, and the drag reduction range is increased to Reθ≈4100 compared to rib&SHS (Reθ≈2200). Using correlation algorithms, it observed that the spacing between low-speed streaks over D-rib&SHS is larger than that of rib&SHS and the smooth surface. This finding suggested that the spacing between the hairpin vortex legs of D-rib&SHS is wider. The increased spacing between the hairpin vortex legs reduces the likelihood of vortex head formation between the two quasi-streamwise vortices, ultimately suppressing the auto-generation of hairpin vortices. Consequently, the development of hairpin vortex packets over D-rib&SHS is also inhibited. These phenomena observed over D-rib&SHS can be attributed to the combined effects of velocity slip on the superhydrophobic coating and the secondary flow over the divergent riblets near the wall. In addition, unlike divergent riblets that are not covered with a superhydrophobic coating, where the drag reduction effect is more pronounced with a yaw angle of 30° compared to 10°, D-rib&SHS with a 10° yaw angle demonstrated a superior drag reduction effect compared to D-rib&SHS with a 30° yaw angle. This innovative composite surface enhances the drag reduction effect and expands the drag reduction Reynolds number range, offering a new approach to mitigating drag in turbulent boundary layer flows.

Experimental measurement of spatio-temporally resolved energy dissipation rate in turbulent Rayleigh–Bénard convection

We report a home-built velocity-gradient-tensor-resolved particle image velocimetry (VGTR-PIV) system which spatio-temporally resolves all components of the velocity gradient tensor. This technique is applied to the paradigmatic turbulent Rayleigh–Bénard convection system in a cylindrical cell at three representative positions, i.e. centre, side and bottom regions. The VGTR-PIV system allows us to directly measure, for the first time, the spatio-temporally resolved energy dissipation rate and enstrophy in turbulent thermal convection. In the experiment, the Rayleigh number $Ra$ varied in the range $2 \times 10^8 \leqslant Ra \leqslant 8 \times 10^9$ and the Prandtl number $Pr$ was fixed at $Pr = 4.34$ . Compared with the fully resolved energy dissipation rate $\varepsilon$ , the pseudo-dissipation provides the best estimate within $3\,\%$ , the planar (two-dimensional) surrogate has a larger relative error and the one-dimensional surrogate leads to the largest error. The power-law scalings of the time-averaged energy dissipation rate with the Rayleigh number follow $\langle \varepsilon _c \rangle _t / (\nu ^3 H^{-4}) = 9.86 \times 10^{-6} Ra^{1.54 \pm 0.02}$ , $\langle \varepsilon _s \rangle _t / (\nu ^3 H^{-4}) = 9.26 \times 10^{-3} Ra^{1.25 \pm 0.02}$ and $\langle \varepsilon _b \rangle _t / (\nu ^3 H^{-4}) = 2.70 \times 10^{-2} Ra^{1.23 \pm 0.02}$ in the centre, side and bottom regions, respectively where $\nu$ is dynamic viscosity and $H$ is cell height. These scaling relations, along with our earlier measured time-averaged energy dissipation rate at the bottom wall surface $\langle \varepsilon _w \rangle _t / (\nu ^3 H^{-4}) = 9.65 \times 10^{-2} Ra^{1.25 \pm 0.02}$ (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 947, 2022, A15), provide important constraints against which theoretical models may be tested. For the centre and side locations in the convection cell, the probability density functions (p.d.f.s) of the energy dissipation rate and enstrophy both follow a stretched exponential distribution. For the bottom region, the p.d.f.s of dissipation and enstrophy exhibit a stretched exponential distribution outside the viscous boundary layer and an exponential distribution inside the viscous boundary layer. It is also found that extreme events with high dissipation are the most intermittent in the side region, whereas the bottom region is less intermittent than the cell centre.

Investigation of turbulent flow induced by particle sedimentation using RIM-PIV

The spatiotemporal structure of the flow field during particle–cloud sedimentation has not been sufficiently investigated. In this study, experiments on the sedimentation process of particle clouds in water are conducted using hydrogel particles with a refractive index similar to that of water as the settling particles. The flow field during the sedimentation process of particle clouds in water is measured using particle image velocimetry (PIV). Although the measurement conditions in this study are restricted to one condition owing to the limitations of the measurable area by our PIV system and the available hydrogel particles, the measurement target is novel because it has not been measured so far. The spatiotemporal structure of the turbulent flows is investigated by analyzing the turbulent flows induced by the sedimentation particles using the PIV system. Furthermore, the turbulent structure of the vortex formed by particle sedimentation is examined.

Investigation of coherent structures in low-speed turbulent boundary layers controlled by AC-DBD plasma actuators

The dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) actuator has the advantages of being lightweight, having no moving parts, ease of use, and fast response, and has received widespread attention in flow control applications. Turbulence boundary layer drag reduction is one of many applications of DBD flow control, but the mechanism of DBD actuator turbulence drag reduction needs further investigation. The effect of DBD excitation on the skin-friction drag of a turbulent boundary layer on a flat plate at different flow speeds was investigated experimentally. The change in skin-friction drag was measured using oil film interferometry, and the velocity distribution within the boundary layer was obtained using a particle image velocimetry system. The results showed that under the action of the plasma actuator, the local skin-friction coefficient was measured to decrease by 49%. Through dynamic mode decomposition, plasma actuators can increase the thickness of the low-velocity region in the boundary layer, reduce the intensity of Q2 and Q4 events, and inhibit the development of coherent structures, thereby achieving drag reduction.

Velocity measurements in particle-laden high-enthalpy flow using non-intrusive techniques

This research aims at analysing the particle-laden flow of the hypersonic high-enthalpy wind tunnel L2K, situated in Köln at the German Aerospace Center (DLR). In the L2K wind tunnel, Martian atmosphere can be created, and the facility can simulate heat load conditions encountered during atmospheric entry of Martian missions. In the tests, a simplified Martian atmosphere (97% CO2 and 3% N2) was used. The high-enthalpy flow was loaded with micrometric particles of magnesium oxide. The particles’ mean velocity was measured with a 2D–2C particle image velocimetry (PIV) system, in the region right downstream the nozzle expansion of the wind tunnel. The work proves the possibility of creating a high-enthalpy particle-laden flow for thermal protection systems (TPS) testing with simulated Martian atmosphere. Average particle velocities of around 2000 m/s are measured and compared with the numerical simulation of the wind tunnel’s particle-free flow, and with the flow velocity measured with tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS). The study also highlights some unexpected results and features of the high-enthalpy particle-laden flow and proposes some theories for the causes of such effects, which include agglomeration due to melting, and gravitational effect.

Tip Vortex Study of a Rotor with Double-Swept Blade Tips

An experimental aerodynamic study was conducted, analyzing the wake structure of a four-bladed model rotor with a forward-backward swept tip geometry inspired by the ONERA-DLR “Etude d´un Rotor Aéroacoustique Technologiquement Optimisé”-design. Similar tip designs are used on some modern helicopter main rotors. The experiments were conducted at the Rotor Test Facility Göttingen (RTG) in hover-like conditions using a stereoscopic high-speed particle image velocimetry system. The results are compared with those of a reference rotor using a conventional parabolic blade tip. The test parameters include both constant-pitch cases and pitch-oscillating cases with a cyclic swashplate input. The constant-pitch tests show a two-step stall behavior for the double-swept tip, with the first step characterized by a reduced thrust slope and a reduced rotor efficiency. This effect is explained by a repositioning and a structural change of the tip vortex generation. The pitch-oscillating cases show that the double-swept tip results in an earlier tip stall compared to the parabolic geometry while maintaining high thrust levels. The dynamic tip stall yields a break-down of the wake’s tip vortex system, which is replaced by a spanwise band with small-scale turbulent structures and trailed vorticity, but no large-scale vortices.

Experimental Investigation of a Pulsation Reactor via Optical Methods

Material treatment in pulsation reactors (PRs) offers the potential to synthesize powdery products with desirable properties, such as nano-sized particles and high specific surface areas, on an industrial scale. These exceptional material characteristics arise from specific process parameters within PRs, characterized by the periodically varying conditions and the resulting enhanced heat and mass transfer between the medium and the particulate material. Understanding flame behavior and the re-ignition mechanism is crucial to controlling the efficiency and stability of the pulse combustion process. In order to accomplish this objective, an investigation was conducted into flame behavior within the combustion chamber of a Helmholtz-type pulsation reactor. The study was focused on primarily analyzing the flame propagation process and examining flame velocity throughout the operational cycle of the reactor. Two optical methods—natural flame luminosity (NFL) and particle image velocimetry (PIV)—were applied in related experiments. An analysis of the NFL measurement data revealed a correlation between the intensity of light emitted by the pulsed flame and the air-fuel equivalence ratio (range from 0.89 to 2.08 in this study). It is observed that a lower air-fuel equivalence ratio leads to higher flame luminosity in the PR. In addition, in order to study the parameters related to system stability and energy transfer efficiency, this study also focuses on the local velocity field measurement method and an example of a fluid flow result in a combustion chamber by using a phase-locked PIV measurement system upgraded from a classic PIV system. The presented results herein contribute to the characterization of flame propagation within a pulsation reactor, as well as in pulsatile flows over one working cycle in a broader context, with flow velocity in the center of the combustion chamber ranging from 1.5 m/s to 5 m/s. Furthermore, this study offers insights into the applicable experimental methodologies for investigating the intricate interplay between flames and flows within combustion processes.

DIY-PIV system for Poiseuille flow investigation in undergraduate fluid mechanics course

Fluid flow visualization techniques are becoming more widespread every year due to the availability of lasers, high-speed cameras, and the development of a large amount of image processing software. Nowadays, one of the most popular methods of flow optical visualization is particle image velocimetry (PIV). PIV is an innovative way to measure and analyze fluid characteristics, giving students a more in-depth understanding of how fluids move. This paper is focused on using low-cost components and free software to implement PIV for Poiseuille flow investigation in an undergraduate fluid mechanics course. The introduction discusses how PIV is being used as a complementary method in educational institutions, highlights the high cost of equipment to implement PIV, and gives examples of low-cost do-it-yourself (DIY)-PIV systems. The following sections present the theoretical background, descriptions of the DIY-PIV experimental setup, and plan of the investigation for the Poiseuille flow analysis. A brief overview of free image processing software for the PIV implementation is also provided. The last section presents the results of the Poiseuille flow study and analyzes the measurement quality using the created DIY-PIV system. The present experimental investigation covers topics and reinforces skills related to concepts: laminar flow, Poiseuille flow (velocity distribution, maximum and average velocity), Reynolds number, and measurement error.

Simultaneous two-plane flame front detection using PIV based on defocusing.

This Letter presents a simultaneous two-plane flame front detection method. It is based on a standard single-camera single-plane particle image velocimetry (PIV) system in combination with an inexpensive and compact image splitting device. The image splitting optics places images from two depth-offset planes onto the two halves of a camera sensor. A shallow depth of field ensures only one plane is in focus on each half of the sensor. By using a high-pass filter and a novel two-step filter we have devised, the out-of-focus particle images are effectively removed, while the in-focus particle images remain, allowing the turbulent flame fronts on two planes to be detected simultaneously. Our approach could be combined with conventional polarization/wavelength discrimination methods to achieve simultaneous multi-plane flame front reconstruction with similarly high in-plane spatial resolution to single-plane measurement and is suitable for practical combustion devices with limited optical access.

Experimental study of coherent structures and bed shear stress on a smooth bed under a solitary wave

The coherent structures induced by a solitary wave on a smooth bed were studied in a wave flume. The solitary wave was near the point of incipient breaking and the wave Reynolds number was in the intermittent turbulent regime. The velocity field inside the bottom boundary layer was measured using a Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) system. The bed shear stress was obtained from the measured velocities in the viscous sublayer by employing the Newton's law of viscosity. It was found that the generation and maintenance of turbulent coherent structures in a solitary wave boundary layer was like that observed in oscillatory flow boundary layers at similar wave Reynolds numbers, a process that was first described as the bursting phenomenon in the wall boundary layer of steady flows. The effect of coherent structures on the instantaneous velocity profile and bed shear stress was examined. Ejections and sweeps were found to play a crucial role in producing large bed shear stress fluctuations. Quadrant analysis and probability distribution plots of the bed shear stress showed that sweep (Q4) events were responsible for producing instantaneous bed shear stress values as high as four to five times the standard deviation above the mean, while ejection (Q2) events produced bed shear stress values mostly below the mean. Both types of events were more numerous than outward interaction (Q1) and inward interaction (Q3). It was also found that a high proportion of the measured velocity profiles that did not follow the law of the wall were associated with large vortices in the boundary layer. It was shown that the instantaneous velocities did not conform to a law-of-the-wall velocity profile unless the measured velocity field was averaged over an area large compared to the vortices.

Near-wall bubble migration and wake structure in viscous liquids

The migration and wake structure of a single bubble in a viscous medium near a vertical wall have been experimentally investigated using a two-camera orthogonal shadowing method combined with a particle image velocimetry system. The effects of bubble size, liquid properties, and migration modes on the motion of a near-wall bubble and its wake structure are discussed. It is shown that, unlike migration in pure water, collisions between bubbles and walls are rare in viscous liquids. As viscosity increases, the mobility of the bubble near the wall changes from 3D to 2D and finally exhibits 1D motion with only one degree of freedom. While 1D motion is dominated by viscous forces, 2D migration is influenced by both wall effects and viscous forces, while 3D migration is primarily affected by bubble size. After analyzing the wakes produced by different factors, it was found that the wakes generated by mobile bubbles in three dimensions exhibit similar shedding patterns to Karman vortex streets, while two-dimensional wakes show stronger continuity. The average topological flow field structure of the bubble wake is obtained through periodic phase averaging, and the effect of different factors on the evolution of near-wall bubble wakes is analyzed.

An Experimental Database for the Analysis of Bursting of a Laminar Separation Bubble

The bursting phenomenon consists in the switch of a laminar separation bubble from a short to a long configuration. In the former case, reduced effects on profile pressure distribution are typically observed with respect to the attached condition. On the contrary, long bubbles provoke significant variations in the loading coefficient upstream of the separation position, with increased risk of stall of the lifting surfaces. The present work presents an experimental database describing separated boundary layers evolving under different Reynolds numbers, adverse pressure gradients and free-stream turbulence levels. Overall, more than 80 flow conditions were tested concerning short and long bubbles for the characterization of separated flows under turbine-like conditions. Measurements were performed on a flat plate geometry using a fast-response Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) system. For each flow case, two sets of 6000 flow records were acquired with an acquisition frequency equal to 300 and 1000 Hz. Based on existing criteria for the identification of the bursting phenomenon, the flow cases were clustered in terms of short and long bubble states. Additionally, the kind of instability (i.e., convective or absolute) developing into the separated boundary layer was identified based on flow statistics. The present data captures the existing link between the bursting of a laminar separation bubble and the onset of the absolute instability of the separated shear layer, with stationary vortices forming in the dead air region.

ON THE GENERATION OF COANDA FLOW WITH INFLUENTIAL PARAMETERS IN COAXIAL TRIPLE SWIRLER

The effects of five coaxial triple swirler configurations on mass flow rate distribution, swirling flow structure, and Coanda flow formation to transition were investigated. The study utilized a numerical investigation with the Re-Normalization Group k-ε Turbulence model to simulate the internal and external flow field. An experimental setup was also provided to validate the numerical results using a Particle Image Velocimetry system. The swirling flow structure was classified into three categories: Coanda, Transient, and no-Coanda flows. Results showed that the transient swirling flow from the Coanda flow occurred with a slight change in the outer recess length, which can control the three flow categories. Also, the study found two types of swirling flow structures with cylindrical and bubble shapes with the change in the inner recess length, a key variable in controlling the swirling flow structure. Additionally, the study presented quantitative results to predict the formation of the Coanda flow using dimensionless parameters composed of momentum ratios of swirlers. Overall, the findings of this study provide valuable insights into the design and optimization of coaxial triple swirler configurations for practical applications.

Closed-loop plasma flow control of a turbulent cylinder wake flow using machine learning at Reynolds number of 28 000

Machine learning is increasingly used for active flow control. In this experimental study, alternating-current dielectric barrier discharge plasma actuators are deployed for the closed-loop intelligent control of the flow around a cylinder at a Reynolds number of 28 000 based on the velocity feedback from two hot-wire sensors placed in the wake. Variations in the cylinder drag are monitored by a load cell, and the temporal response of the wake flow field is visualized by a high-speed particle image velocimetry system working at 1 kHz. The high-speed control law is operated using a field programmable gate array optimized by genetic programing (GP). The results show that the peak drag reduction achieved by machine learning is of similar magnitude to that of conventional steady actuation (∼15%), while the power saving ratio is 35% higher than with conventional techniques because of the reduced power consumption. Analysis of the best GP control laws shows that the intensity of plasma actuation should be kept at a medium level to maximize the power-saving ratio. When compared with the baseline uncontrolled flow, the best controlled cases constrain the meandering motion of the cylinder wake, resulting in a narrow stabilized velocity deficit zone in the time-averaged sense. According to the results of proper orthogonal decomposition and dynamic mode decomposition, Karman vortex shedding is promoted under the best GP control.

Inlet Mach number ratio and static temperature ratio coupling effect on vortex structure characteristics downstream of the flameholder in subsonic–supersonic mixing flow

The effect of the inlet Mach number ratio and the static temperature ratio between the supersonic and the subsonic flows on the distortion characteristics of the recirculation zone downstream of the flameholder was experimentally investigated. The fluid structure was visualized and measured by a calibrated particle image velocimetry system under the subsonic–supersonic mixing flow, which was constructed by a flat plate to divide the rectangular flow channel. The present results reveal that the fluid structure downstream of the flameholder remains stable over a wide range of the inlet Mach number ratio and exhibits insensitivity to changes in the inlet static temperature ratio. Increasing the inlet Mach number ratio enhances the distribution area and the mixing effect of the subsonic–supersonic shear layer, resulting in an amplified asymmetry of the dual-vortex and a larger vortex size near the supersonic mainstream. The static temperature ratio influences the ejection effect of the supersonic flow on the subsonic flow, causing the recirculation zone to shift toward the supersonic mainstream and facilitating interaction with the subsonic–supersonic mixing layer. The findings contribute to a better understanding of the interaction between the subsonic–supersonic shear layer and the recirculation zone, offering guidance for improved subsonic–supersonic mixing flow designs in combustion systems.

PIV experimental analysis of the escape phenomenon of air spraying jet in factories

Inefficient air spraying can release a large amount of paint particles from a spraying jet, which can seriously endanger the health of operators. The flow field characteristics of air atomizing spray guns have a significant influence on spraying efficiency. To investigate the reasons for the escape of paint particles during air spraying, improve efficiency at the source and curb the escape of pollutants into a factory building, this study measured the whole flow field of an air spray gun via a 2D particle image velocimetry (PIV) system. The results showed that the spraying jet velocity reached a maximum of 28 m/s near the spray nozzle with a Reynolds number of 3000 and subsequently decayed rapidly due to the strong momentum exchange with the surrounding air. The radial velocity at the junction of paint mist and air first increases and then decreases (maximum 0.5 m/s). The turbulence intensity was relatively high at the spraying jet boundary. In addition, the spay flow at the nozzle and the jet boundary showed high intermittency. The turbulence structures were studied by proper orthogonal decomposition (POD). The results indicated that the radial velocity of spray was the major source underlying the development of spraying jet radial diffusion. Finally, the spraying efficiency was calculated to be between 53 % and 58 %. For air spraying, suppressing radial movement can improve spraying efficiency by up to 40 %, which is essential to controlling the escape of paint mist and improving the working environment in spray booths.
